What is Nanotherm therapy?

NanoTherm therapy is an innovative method of treatment, applied in malignant glial tumors, eg glioblastoma multiforme. NanoTherm therapy is applicable to both primary brain tumours and their recurrences. A solution containing iron oxide nanoparticles is injected (during surgery) directly to the postoperative bed (on the wall of tissues surrounding the resection cavity). Nanoparticles are tiny molecules having a diameter of 15 nanometers that are very finely scattered in water. Then, after the surgery, the patient is subjected to a series of 6 treatments (during 3 weeks 2 treatments a week at an interval of at least one day between the procedures in the same week) using the NanoActival device that uses the variable magnetic field. In addition, cancer cells subjected to innovative NanoTherm therapy become more sensitive to the parallel radiotherapy or chemotherapy (if necessary). The nanoparticles introduced into the postoperative bed remain in it as an implant. There are special structures on their surfaces, so they can not move and do not violate healthy tissues.

NanoTherm therapy is carried out by experienced neurosurgery
doctors of Neurosurgery and Child Neurosurgery Department of University
Hospital no 4 in Lublin, supervised by Prof. Radosław Rola, MD, PhD

The course of NanoTherm Therapy

The first stage is a surgical procedure of removing a malignant intracranial glial tumor. After removing the tumor during the same surgery, the neurosurgeon applies magnetic liquid containing

After removing the tumor during the same surgery, the neurosurgeon applies magnetic liquid containing nanoparticles and simultaneously introduces a catheter for direct measurement and monitoring of temperatures in the treatment area during the first activation session and it is performed using NanoActivator®. nanoparticles and simultaneously introduces a catheter for direct temperature measurement and monitoring in the treatment area during the first NanoActivator® session.

This is a specially designed medical device that generates variable magnetic field to activate nanoparticles, and thus provides the desired temperature distribution in the treatment area. Another step after surgery is the execution of six 1-hour nanoactivation sessions in a three-week period (2 treatments per week at an interval of at least 1 day between the procedures in the same week). When performing the nanoactivation session, the patient is hospitalized.

NECESSARY MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS

In order to qualify a given patient for NaoTherm therapy, it is necessary to send a copy of medical documentation of existing treatment and magnetic resonance not older than 4 weeks by e-mail or a traditional postal service.

Medical documentation of the patient.

The patient qualified for NanoTherm therapy is obliged to present a COVID-19 test, which was performed at 72h before admission to the hospital.

Before the therapy, the patient is obliged to perform a pantomogram (panoramic (flat) teeth, lower jaw bone and upper jaw bone x-ray) and send it along with a description to the hospital.

It is also necessary to remove all metal and electronic implants from the head and chest area (about 55.cm from the tumor), such as:

Teeth fillings, crown, implants

Pacemaker, defibrillator

Neurostimulation electrodes

Metal ports

Hearing aids

Bone clamps, etc.

ECG electrodes, temporary cannulas, pressure measurement cuffs

Daily use objects such as buttons, jewelry, earrings, etc.
